Synopsis

Foster, a bookie, has been accepting racetrack bets from J. C. Poindexter, a mysterious millionaire whom he has never seen even though he has been a steady winner. When Poindexter wins $50,000 on a long shot, Foster sends runners Ted Frazier and Sleeper to deliver the money. Upon discovering that they are being tailed by thieves, the pair decide that the best way to safeguard the winnings is to entrust the money to the U.S. mail. Their plan goes awry, however, when Sleepy puts the money in the wrong envelope and it is then delivered to Susan Bannister, a secretary. Susan quits her job to devote herself to a spending spree, and by the time that Ted and Sleeper find her, only $8,000 remains. Foster, disbelieving Ted's preposterous story, gives him thirty six-hours to come up with the money. Desperate, Susan, Sleeper and Ted go to a gambling club, where they meet Julius Caeser, an odd little fellow who complains about his incredible luck. To humor him, Ted makes bets with his new acquaintance and wins $30,000 from him. As his deadline nears, Ted, who has fallen in love with Susan, wishes to spend his last minutes alone with her, and so bets Julius $30,000 that he can not hide from him. Taking the bet, Julius runs off to find a hiding place when Foster arrives and orders that Ted be taken to his warehouse and killed. Meanwhile, Susan discovers that Julius Caeser is J. C. Poindexter and frantically searches for him. She finally finds J. C., and the pair race to the warehouse where Ted is being held captive. There, Poindexter identifies himself, admits that he owes Ted $60,000 and pays him. Ted then gives Foster $50,000, which Foster returns to Poindexter. With the remaining $10,000, Susan and Ted make plans for their honeymoon.

According to a news item in Los Angeles Times, Timothy Carroll was to have written the screenplay for this picture, but his contribution to the final film has not been confirmed. In 1945, Charles Barton directed Bud Abbott and Lou Costello in another version of this story for Universal titled The Noose Hangs High.
