Synopsis

Banned from auto racing, former stock car driver Ace Jones stops for repairs on his truck at a garage in an Iowa town. The garage is run by Sandy Richards, the widow of another driver, with the help of Ronnie, her brother-in-law, and Toad, an elderly mechanic. Ace stays on, becomes Sandy's business partner, and gets the garage back on its feet by collecting debts owed by racers. Eventually, Ace decides to go back to racing himself, despite the fact that Herbert Herpgruve, the local track owner who loves Sandy, dislikes him intensely. When Ace and Sandy fall in love and subsequently quarrel, Toad, believing that Sandy would be more secure with Herb, tampers with Ace's car, hoping that Ace will be killed on the track. Realizing too late that he has misjudged Ace, Toad runs onto the track during the race and meets his death. In the pileup that ensues, Ace is badly crippled and two of his racing buddies are killed. Following the tragedy, Sandy decides to ignore Herb's persistent interest and stick by Ace.
