Synopsis
At the Club Sheherezade, singer Joyce Ford finishes her song with the band led by Donald Westcott and prepares to leave with her boyfriend, Craig Harding. As she enters the alley, Joyce is accosted by a man neither Don nor Craig recognize. Joyce leaves, but Don and Craig are picked up by the police for fighting with the mysterious man, who escapes. Because Craig's father is District Attorney Stanley S. Harding, police chief Alan O'Brien releases Don and Craig, after which they go to Joyce's apartment. Craig is wildly jealous, both of the man in the alley and Don, who had once been in love with Joyce. Don leaves as Craig and Joyce are quarreling, and while he is in a drugstore calling his girl friend, Harding's daughter Diana, he sees Craig leave. The next day, Joyce's body is found and Harding is called in on the case. Fearing that Craig, who disappeared after learning about Joyce's death, is responsible, Harding, who is known as an unforgiving prosecutor, seeks to implicate Don. The circumstantial evidence points toward Don, especially as he refuses to tell Harding about his call from the drugstore, because he and Diana have kept their relationship a secret. Meanwhile, Craig hides in Diana's room and tells her that he did go back to Joyce's apartment after their quarrel, but that she was already dead. Craig disappears again after Diana tells her father about her love for Don. While Harding arranges for a microphone to be placed in Don's cell so that his conversations with Diana can be recorded in case they implicate him in the murder, Craig is picked up at Joyce's apartment by O'Brien as he attempts to retrieve a book with Harding's nameplate. Craig assures his father that he is innocent, and they return to Joyce's apartment together to get the book. While there, they discover the apartment manager searching for his initialed tie pin, from which Joyce sustained a deep wound before she was killed. After Craig recognizes the manager as the man in the alley, the manager confesses his guilt, claiming that he murdered Joyce out of self-defense and jealousy. Don is released and Craig, who is also cleared, promises his father that he will straighten up. The next day, the apartment manager is convicted, and Harding, whose concerns about his irresponsible son have caused him to adopt a more sympathetic attitude, signs a petition requesting that another condemned man be given life imprisonment instead of the death penalty.
