Synopsis
When sheep rancher John Reed is killed, a group of Rangers, led by Colonel Blake, believe that a feud between cattlemen and sheepmen was the reason behind his death. As the Rangers approach the hideout of Reed's suspected killer, the pass they are traveling through is dynamited and Colonel Blake is killed in the explosion. Unlike the other Rangers, Blake suspected Duke Rand of killing Reed for his ranch, which is now run by Reed's daughter Midge. Some time later, as Rand and his men ride toward the Reed ranch, they see the Rangers chasing escaped criminal Ed "Trigger" Jones, who is really Marshal Tom Evans. Jones evades the Rangers and, after joining Rand's gang, is assigned to harass Midge. In an effort to ingratiate himself with Midge, Jones stops Rand's men from running off her sheep, prompting her to offer him a job at the ranch. When Jones returns to the Rand ranch, the other men, angered by his interference, confront him. Rand then announces his plans to herd Midge's sheep into a canyon and dynamite them. To facilitate his plans, he orders Jones to take the job with Midge. On the way to Midge's ranch, Jones encounters Sugar Grey, the young daughter of Captain Grey, a ranger, and her friend Slim, and he sends a message to Grey. Later, Sugar and Slim observe Rand's preparations to dynamite the Reed ranch and hurry to warn Jones. To forestall Rand, Jones tells him that he has made a deal with Midge to buy the ranch. Meanwhile, Slim identifies some rocks from Midge's ranch as copper ore. Jones then sends Sugar to summon the Rangers, and presents Rand with a bill of sale signed by Midge. The eavesdropping Midge believes that she has been double-crossed and forces Jones to reveal his real identity. Rand's men tie up Jones and head off to stop the Rangers, but Rusty, Jones's horse, frees him, and he hurries after Rand. After Slim stops Rand from dynamiting the Rangers, a shootout ensues. Midge then learns that her father was killed by Rand, who wanted the copper he had discovered on the ranch.
