Synopsis
Lum Edwards and Abner Peabody, the elderly proprietors of the Jot 'Em Down general store in Pine Ridge, Arkansas, take an active interest in the problems of their neighbors. When little Effie Lou Stillman is killed by a hit-and-run driver, her father Wes, an impoverished alcoholic, blames himself for the accident. To assauge Wes's guilt, Lum and Abner convince Constable Caleb Weehunt to appoint Wes deputy in charge of reckless driving. The next crisis occurs when Doc Walt's son, young doctor Kenneth Barnes of Adamstown, is forced to postpone his wedding to Alice, the postmistress, because Alice's embittered and selfish aunt, Jessica Spence, insists that Alice must support her little brother Jimmy after she marries. When Doc is temporarily paralyzed by a stroke, Lum and Abner realize that the only way they can lure Ken back to Pine Ridge is to provide him with a mobile medical unit like the one he has in Adamstown. They approach the wealthy Jessica for the funds with which to buy one, but she holds a grudge against Doc and refuses. Soon after, Jimmy falls gravely ill with pneumonia, and although Jessica refuses Doc's help, Alice defies her and takes Jimmy for treatment. With the help of Lum and Abner, the ailing Doc devises a makeshift oxygen inhilator that saves Jimmy, but pays for the boy's life with his own when he dies of exhaustion. All ends happily, however, when Will Danielson, Jessica's secretary, is arrested for Effie Lou's murder, and Jessica, transformed by Doc's death, dedicates a mobile unit as a memorial to the beloved country doctor.

Notes
The working title of this film was Money Isn't Everything. As noted in the Variety review, this picture marked radio personalities Lum and Abner's first movie appearance and launched a new series for RKO. The series, starring Lum and Abner (Chester Lauck and Norris Goff) as proprietors of the Jot 'Em Down general store in Pine Ridge, Arkansas, ran until 1946 and consisted of five films released by RKO. The first two films were produced by Voco Productions and the last three by Jack Williams Votion Productions. The last entry in the RKO series was the 1946 film Partners In Time (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1941-50). The pair appeared in a final film, Lum and Abner Abroad that was released by Howco Productions in 1956. Originally shot as three separate episodes of a television series that was, apparently, never broadcast, that film featured the characters as "good will ambassadors" who travel to different European countries.
