Synopsis

After Charlie, a bumbling cook, and Annie, a wise-cracking waitress, lose their jobs at the Daredevil Diner, they hitchhike to Updike University to help run a bookshop inherited by their friend Magda, another former waitress at the diner. Unknown to Charlie, a group of foreign spies have mistaken him for a missing cosmonaut who has defected with invaluable spaceflight data. Before long, the bookshop is overrun with secret agents, counter-agents, security personnel attached to a space conclave, and the Updike police force. At the same time, a pair of robbers take advantage of the confusion and attempt to tunnel their way into an adjoining bank. Eventually, Charlie and Annie are captured by the master spy, Mr. Big, who turns out to be a midget. Charlie disposes of him by means of a trapdoor in the floor while Annie knocks his bodyguard unconscious. After the would-be bank robbers are apprehended and the real missing cosmonaut gives himself up, life returns to normal at the bookstore.
