Synopsis
Robert Drake, known as the Colorado Kid, is the foreman on Colonel Gifford's ranch. The Kid becomes upset when the drunken colonel sells some of his cattle to unscrupulous Wolf Hines, and after the two quarrel over the affair, the colonel fires the Kid. The Kid nonetheless follows his employer home, but on the way the colonel is ambushed and killed by Hines's henchmen, Sims Leathers and Ab. Hendry. Sheriff Bill Hannon, who is controlled by Hines, arrives on the scene and arrests the Kid on suspicion of murder. The Kid is convicted and sentenced to be hanged, despite his protests of innocence. The Kid's friend, Bibben Tucker, helps him escape from jail, after which the Kid saves the life of B. R. Toles, a mine owner who is feuding with Hines over water rights. Believing him to be innocent, Toles hires the Kid to help him fight Hines, who threatens to have Toles arrested for aiding the Kid. After the Kid attempts to shoot Hines, he, Toles and Toles's daughter Irma escape to Toles's ranch. There, Irma, who deplores violence, tries to convince the Kid to leave to protect her father, who is now in greater danger from Hines and his thugs because he is sheltering the Kid. The Kid refuses to stop seeking his revenge and tries to follow Hannon when he leaves Toles's ranch. Irma stops him by roping him and tying him up, after which she tells the sheriff she will turn over the Kid to him if he arranges a meeting for her with Hines. After the pair leave, Bibben again frees the Kid, and shows him some money that Hines gave him. The serial numbers on the money match numbers that Hines gave to the colonel, and so the Kid and Bibben ride to Hines's cabin to get a confession from him. At the cabin, Irma reveals that she tricked Hannon, and instead of selling the Kid out, she proposes to Hines that she and her father will give him the water he wants if he lets the Kid go free. Hines accuses her of double-crossing him when the Kid and Bibben arrive, and he attempts to hold her hostage. The Kid finds the colonel's saddlebags and Hines confesses to the murder, after which he tries to escape. The Kid captures him, and after Hines reveals that Irma was trying to protect the Kid, the young couple kiss and make up.
