Synopsis

The French 5th Company Africa stationed at Fort El Hamed in North Africa, is wiped out by Arab nomads, forcing the Ministry of War in Paris to hold a special meeting. Because the attackers used modern weapons, spy Andre Duvac is sent to Marseilles to find the source of their military supplies. Newsreelman Waldo Rohrbeck is order by his boss at Graphic Newsreel Inc. to find fellow cameraman Steve Mitchell and go to North Africa to cover the Arab rebellion. Waldo searches the nightclubs of Paris until he finds Steve at the Le Radis Bleu trying to photograph Arab beauty Renee Claire. Renee shuns Steve and meets with gun smuggler Corbin, to whom she gives a pearl necklace as payment for more weapons. The police raid the nightclub looking for Corbin. During the melee, Steve tries to help Renee escape, but they are all arrested. At the police station, the group is questioned by Duvac, and it is revealed that the necklace was part of the Carl Dimitri collection, presumed lost when his plane crashed into the English Channel. Steve and Waldo then go to North Africa to find Dimitri. In Marseilles, they board the steamship S.S. Fontaine and find crated guns, but after being discovered by Renee, the two are captured and put into the brig. When the steamship is discovered by a French patrol boat, Steve and Waldo break out. While attempting to make a run for it, the patrol boat fires on the ship, killing the captain. In Algiers, all aboard the patrol boat are arrested and prepared for execution, but Duvac shows up and releases Steve and Waldo. Duvac, an old lover of Renee, allows Steve and Waldo to help her escape, then follows them. In town, Renee meets with Arab leaders Gura Din and Hazila, Renee's rival. Hazila jealously discounts Renee's story, calling her a spy and traitor. When Steve and Waldo arrive, searching for Renee, they are captured, and Gura Din orders their execution and Renee's arrest. Duvac, dressed as an Arab, breaks in and rescues the three; however, in their escape, he is shot by Hazila. As they travel in the news van, Renee insists that they take Duvac to the French outpost, Fort Chadan, despite the danger to herself. Once there, Duvac again orders the three released, but followed. In Karashar, the van arrives, much to Hazila's dismay and Renee, Steve and Waldo met with Dimitri. As Renee tells of their exploits, Hazila arrives with the watch that Duvac dropped upon their rescue, engraved: "To Andre--Love, Renee." Arrested again, Steve and Waldo break out with the help of Teeda, an Arab woman whom Waldo mistakenly unveiled, a faux pas that has led to their "engagement." After Duvac arrives in Karashar and is captured, Renee is forced to watch as he is tied to a wild horse and dragged. Steve and Waldo take out the sentries as a French airplane flies by, dropping bombs and machine-gunning the Arabs. Steve then releases Duvac, who saves Renee by shooting Dimitri. The French flag is raised over Karashar once again, and Duvac and Renee reconcile while Steve photographs Waldo being chased by Teeda's father, his "future father-in-law."
