Synopsis

Angry at not having received the promotion he thinks he deserves, Victor Gromaire, a young French magistrate in Cochin-China, plans a trip to the capital to complain to the governor of the French colony, bypassing his immediate superior, the president. Carouge, a prominent Paris attorney, enlightens Hélène, Victor's wife, that it is because she is too proper that her husband is still a minor official. She consequently calls on the president, inadvertently disclosing her husband's plan; frantic at having endangered her husband's position, Hélène consents to do anything the president wishes if he refrains from calling the governor. Just as he is about to seduce her, a native musician, hiding in the room, is discovered and kills the president, while Hélène protects herself by wounding him. The musician, however, accuses her of the murder; Victor establishes her innocence and, realizing the quality of Hélène's love, promises to start a new career in Paris.
