Synopsis

Near a Cape Canaveral, Florida missile test range, a couple driving home from an afternoon of sunbathing are suddenly killed when their car mysteriously crashes. The wreck is caused by extraterrestrials, Hauron and Nadja, two white, glowing orbs who then inhabit the dead couple's bloodied bodies and walk away from the accident. Nadja carries the man's arm, which was severed from his body, and promises Hauron to attach it back to his new body. Meanwhile, at the test range control center, scientist Dr. Von Hoften watches along with his team while another in a series of missiles explodes only seconds after blastoff. While Von Hoften believes something is wrong with the missile, aspiring young scientist Tom Wright asserts that some force from outer space is interfering with the missions; however, none of the older scientists believe him. Later, when a military police officer sets a guard dog loose on an intruder, the German shepherd easily rips the stranger's arm off. After the officer reports to his superiors that his direct shots did not affect the fleeing man, others note that the dog's bite could not normally tear a man's arm off so easily. Soon after, the stern Von Hoften reprimands his niece and laboratory assistant, Sally Markham, for accepting Tom's offer to have some coffee with him. Later, Hauron and Nadja radio their leader from their hidden laboratory in a cave nearby, while Tom and Sally meet in secret on a double date with friends Bob Hardin and Shirley Carter. When the couples receive interference on their radio station, Tom deduces that another transmitter in the area is illegally using the frequency. Suspecting that the communication has to do with the missile mishaps, Tom uses a portable radio to try to trace the frequency to its source. Meanwhile, Nadja and Hauron radio their leader to report that they have stopped another missile. He then orders them to continue transporting human specimens back home to their planet and to keep disrupting the humans' space missions until their alien invasion begins. When the aliens end their radio contact, Tom and Sally lose the signal before they can find the source and soon after, Hauron shoots down another missile using his ray gun. When Tom reports the illegal transmitter signal, ranking officer Major General Hollister refuses to believe Tom's suspicions about the existence of space aliens. On another double date with Bob and Shirley, Tom and Sally leave the car to try to trace the illegal frequency and in their absence, Nadja and Hauron kidnap Bob and Shirley, take them to the lab and prepare to transport them to their planet through the use of electroshock treatments and freezing their bodies. While Shirley survives in a dazed state, Bob dies and his arm is used to replace Hauron's missing limb. Upon returning to the car, Tom and Sally discover that their friends are missing and, noting evidence of a struggle, Tom insists that they continue tracking the mysterious frequency, hoping to find Bob and Shirley before they are harmed. However, as Tom and Sally enter the cave, Nadja and Hauron use their paralyzing beam to freeze the couple and activate a force field to restrain them. When Tom revives, although he sees the aliens, he still cannot believe that aliens can breath Earth's oxygen. Curious about the young scientist's interest and knowledge, Hauron explains in detail how the restraining force field works and how they will be transported through a hydrogen-like fluid to the alien planet. When the aliens use electroshock on Sally, Tom employs his watch face, which contains radium to make it glow, to shut off the restraining force field, then escapes the cave to go for help. Breaking into a store, Tom telephones the deputy chief, but as he hangs up, store owner Elmer Wesson holds him at gunpoint, forcing Tom to tell him about the alien laboratory nearby. Although Wesson insists that there are no caves in the hills, he follows the deputy chief, Tom and a deputy back to Bob and Shirley's car. As Tom approaches the cave, he leaves them behind to follow a trail of clothes planted by Hauron, who captures him and returns him to the restraining force field. Hauron then leaves his human body and, as a white orb, attacks the deputy. While the deputy chief returns to town with the wounded officer, Wesson remains behind to guard the site. After Sally blurts out that an unscheduled missile launch is to be held that afternoon, Tom offers to give the aliens information in exchange for their release, and after explaining that the radium in his watch shut off the force field, he describes how to adjust their ray gun to destroy that afternoon's mission. Once the aliens leave Tom and Sally in the force field to shoot down the missile, Tom shyly asks Sally to marry him. Meanwhile, after Tom's false directions result in a failure to destroy the missile, Hauron returns to the cave. Just outside, when the deputy chief returns with Hollister and several of the scientists, including Von Hoften, Wesson shows them to the cave opening. After the humans use a bullhorn to order the aliens to surrender, Nadja and Hauron paralyze the group and trap them with Sally and Tom inside the laboratory. The aliens then leave their human bodies and enter the liquid transport tank, disappearing into the fluid. Sally then helps release Tom from the force field using the radium face on his key chain. Conferring with the other scientists, they deduce that adding plastic to the hydrogen-like fluid will cause an explosion. After throwing the plastic inserts in their wallets into the mixture, the laboratory explodes, thus freeing them all. Believing that the aliens are no longer a threat, Tom arranges for Sally to leave with a police officer. However, only moments later, Tom and others can hear the sound of the car crashing and Sally's horrific scream.

The onscreen closing cast credits are listed in order of appearance and differ from the opening credits. Although the film's credits include a copyright statement for CCM Productions, the film was not registered for copyright at the time of its release. However, according to copyright records, a video version of the film was registered by Republic Pictures Corp. on June 9, 1988 under the number PA-412-420. Makeup artist Phil Scheer's surname was misspelled "Shere" in the onscreen credits.
No contemporary reviews or exact release date for the film were found. The Cape Canaveral Monsters was possibly the first starring role for Katherine Victor, but she starred in another 1960 film, Teenage Zombies (see below). The Cape Canaveral Monsters was the only film for actress Linda Connell, who, according to a modern source, was cinematographer Merle Connell's daughter. A modern source also adds Frank Smith to the cast.
