Synopsis

During the gold rush, Monte Hale returns to the town of Gunnison to investigate the murder of his uncle Frank, when his horse and gun are stolen by Indians. After he meets his friend, Chuck Waggoner, who tells Monte that Chuck's estranged wife has sent his daughter Dulcey, a dancer traveling with musicians Foy Willing and the Riders of the Purple Sage, to look for him. Later, on the range, Monte and Chuck discover Ed Smith, also known as "Gunsmoke" Lowry, who has been shot. As he has no gun of his own, Monte decides to borrow Lowry's. In town, Monte inquires about a doctor for Lowry while a disturbance erupts at the tailor's shop which used to belong to Monte's uncle, Frank. Inside, two men attempt to steal clothes from Joyce Mason who works in the shop, but Monte demands that they pay her for the clothes. The men then report back to their boss, Lance Dawson, a businessman and the town's mayor. Later, Monte impersonates Lowry and visits Dawson, who asks him to take the job of town marshal. Monte's first assignment is to force Joyce and her grandmother, Hortense, to turn over their gold-rich land. When Monte and Chuck arrive at the Masons', they hear a loud explosion in their mine, and the Masons assume that Monte and Chuck are responsible for the blast. Joyce's nephew, Rick, finds one of Dawson's men hiding in the brush, who confirms that Monte has been hired by Dawson. Instead of serving them the eviction notice, however, Monte destroys it before their eyes. When Monte goes to Dawson and demands half of the gang's cut, Dawson decides to get rid of him. Later, the leader of the gang, Jud Babbit, asks Monte and Chuck to help him transport some gold. The next morning, the gang attacks the wagon carrying the gold, but Monte and Chuck dive out before they are harmed. When the wagon crashes, the gang thinks Monte and Chuck have been killed. Later, Monte returns to Dawson's office, demanding to know why Monte's uncle was killed. Just then, the real Lowry arrives, and Monte and Chuck escape to the tailor's shop, where Monte tells Joyce who he really is. The sheriff arrives and tells Monte that Joyce has left to deliver the money to pay city taxes owed on their gold, which will protect it from becoming city property. Babbit learns of the plan and orders the gang to have them stopped, but Monte and Chuck arrest Dawson and Babbit before the order can be carried out. Later, after finally learning her husband's whereabouts from Dulcey, Chuck's wife arrives in town and shoots his hat off.
