Synopsis

The town of Cottonwood is plagued by a rustling epidemic when rancher Ann Houston and her cowboys arrest Steve Beaumont, a stranger apprehended with a branding iron in his hand. As the sheriff brings Steve to town, the city council appoints Tom Andrews as their representative to go East and plead with the bankers for an extension on their loans. Brought to trial on the charge of cattle rustling, Steve is freed when no trace of the branding iron can be found. Later that night, Ann captures Steve near her camp, and when her ranch hands threaten to lynch him, Sheriff Webb reveals that Steve is a detective sent by the cattlemen's association. Steve then tells them that he thinks Ellis is one of the rustlers and asks Ann to help him set a trap by allowing him to rustle her herd. Steve's plan backfires, however, when Ellis tells his boss, Ed Brock of the plot and a suspicious Brock decides to form his own posse and kill Steve. The Sheriff sends Ann to warn Steve that he is riding into a trap and later, when Ellis and Strang, another outlaw, ride to Steve's hideout, they find a glove that Ann has dropped. When Strang later discovers that it is Ann's glove, he realizes that Steve must be a lawman. Strang passes the information on to Brock, and Brock confers with Andrews, who has never left town and is working with the rustlers in a scheme to foreclose on the ranchers' land. They send Strang to kidnap Ann, and when Steve follows, Strang takes him prisoner. As Ann's men ride for the sheriff, Steve gets the draw on Strang and turns him over to the sheriff and his posse. Meanwhile, Ellis warns Brock and Andrews that the law is on to them, and the three commandeer a stagecoach. Aided by Ann and her riders, Steve fights a blazing gun battle with the outlaws and brings them to justice.
