Synopsis
Tony Clarendon, who has abandoned his stuffy aristocratic English family for an adventure in Italy, meets a free-spirited Austrian woman, Katha, in an inn on the island of Capri. The two fall madly in love, and Tony proposes to Katha just before war is declared. Tony must return to England at once, and the couple sadly part but promise to be reunited and to have a family together in a house with a vineyard. At home in England, Tony prepares to join the British forces. He visits the Scrope house during teatime, and Margaret Scrope, a childhood friend, makes known to him her amorous intentions. Before Tony can tell Margaret about Katha, however, they are interrupted, and then Tony leaves for the war. Margaret blames Scrope, her father, for encouraging Tony's rugged individualism and vows to get him for herself someday. Tony's father Henry tries to encourage the match with Margaret, especially as Katha is a citizen of the enemy nation, but Tony informs him that he needs Katha like the air he breathes. While the war rages on, Tony's and Katha's letters are intercepted by Austrian officers, and Katha's father is taken away as a traitor, leaving the young woman destitute. When the armistice is declared, Katha immediately prepares to find Tony in England. Tony also travels to Katha's Viennese home, which has been abandoned, and the star-crossed lovers narrowly miss one another on the city's streets. Katha arrives at Vine House, the Clarendon family manor, to find Margaret, who moved in with the Clarendons after her father died. Although Margaret implies that she and Tony are wed, Katha asserts that their marriage is not before God as she is Tony's true soul mate. Tony returns from Austria despondent and finally agrees to marry the persistent Margaret. He returns to his old job as an architect at Ripton & Ripton and draws up the plans for a factory that Margaret has helped commission. A year later, Tony's expansive spirit has been squelched by the demands of his joyless profession, and he asks Margaret that they leave their high society existence for the simple life. Margaret is not enthused with the idea, and after Tony sees her kissing Walter Ripton, she admits her affair with him and also her meeting with Katha. Tony leaves Margaret, goes to Capri and finds Katha at the inn where they first met. They embrace and renew their pledge to marry, have many children, and build a house with a vineyard.
