Synopsis
Bellboy Eddie Martin informs the district attorney that the gangland murder he witnessed in his hotel was committed by Joe Zelli. Fearing an investigation by the governor, a corrupt politician plans to make an example of Zelli and have him convicted, but Zelli threatens to expose him for accepting graft and is subsequently released. A governor's committee does launch an investigation, but Assistant District Attorney Wade and his coworkers pin the murder charge on Eddie, who confesses after being severely beaten. Eddie is hospitalized and his doctor, outraged by his condition, calls in criminal lawyer Harry Berger, who takes an interest in the case. Wade sends three thugs to kill Eddie in prison by hanging him and making it look like suicide, but they are prevented from doing so by the governor's committee, who arrives to interview him. Although three of the corrupt politicians are arrested, and one is murdered by a gangster, Wade is unaffected by the incident. Eddie is released, and months later, he and his wife Peggy see an ironic news bulletin written by Wade, which states that the city is clear of corruption.
