Brief Synopsis

Lyra Belacqua lives in a parallel world in which human souls take the form of lifelong animal companions called daemons. Dark forces are at work in the girl's world, and many children have been kidnapped by beings known as Gobblers. Lyra vows to save her best friend, Roger, after he disappears too. She sets out with her daemon, a tribe of seafarers, a witch, an ice bear and a Texas airman on an epic quest to rescue Roger and save her world.

Chris Weitz was previously attached to direct. Anand Tucker replaced Weitz, but then dropped out due to creative differences. Chris Weitz came back on board to replace Tucker.

The book series by Philip Pullman, originally published by Scholastic, consists of: "Northern Lights", "The Subtle Knife", and "The Amber Spyglass".

Novel is the first in the "His Dark Materials" trilogy.

Literary Sale Date: 02/05/2002

Tom Stoppard wrote the first adaptation of the book. Chris Weitz was then brought on board to do a rewrite and direct. When Weitz dropped out of the project, David Lindsay-Abaire was hired to do a new adaptation draft.
