Synopsis

Young people living in the East Village section of New York City are seen in the context of their rebellion against materialism, corruption, and capitalism in American society and of the transformation of this rebellion into activism. Focus is centered on the hippie movement in transition from an orientation toward "love" and "dropping out" to an increasing confrontation with the established political and social structure. Appearing in the film are runaways, drug dealers, political activists, and community figures, including Abbie Hoffman and Paul Krassner. The film concludes as co-filmmaker Peter Gessner wonders aloud what the enormous amount of energy generated by modern life will produce.
