Synopsis

In a small Continental village, the marriage of Blanchette and Pietro is celebrated by all except for Blanchette's rejected suitor Johannes, who vows vengeance. Years later, Pietro saves one of his two children from being hit by an automobile, but his foot is run over, and he is crippled for life. When war is declared, Johannes enlists and taunts Pietro. Although he wants to join the army, Pietro is rejected because of his lame foot. Johannes serves bravely and is made a sergeant, but after he is captured, he agrees to become a spy. He returns to his village and is hailed a hero. After Blanchette refuses his advances, Johannes convinces the enemy to invade and persuades Pietro to dynamite the bridge. While Pietro is captured and lynched, Johannes attacks Blanchette. The rope around Pietro's neck breaks and he escapes by swimming. After he saves Blanchette, the enemy troops see Johannes' silhouette in Pietro's window and mistakenly shoot him dead. Pietro and Blanchette are saved when their country's troops arrive, and he is honored as a patriot.
