Synopsis

In Acapulco, Mexico, vacationing American Pete Carroll, who is part owner of a copper mine, meets nightclub singer Terry Perreau, a fellow American, and the two go on a fishing expedition on a boat that Pete has borrowed. Although Pete finds Terry's determination to fish for sharks in the ocean waters odd, when a manta ray appears, he struggles to catch the two-ton creature and then cuts it into pieces to use as shark bait. Lured by the bait, a school of sharks soon swarm near the boat and Terry jumps overboard into their path. While Thursday, a seasoned seaman accompanying the couple on the trip, fires his gun to scare away the sharks, Pete dives into the water to rescue her. After Pete and Terry reach the safety of the boat, he slaps her for nearly getting them both killed. Pete later takes pity on Terry, though, when he realizes that she is distraught and suicidal because of her failed singing career. When the boat returns to shore, Terry learns that Pete is not really a skipper and that the whole town is talking about his scheme to seduce Terry by pretending to be one. Putting an abrupt end to their budding friendship, Terry decides to leave Acapulco, and tells Pete that she is returning to her old job singing in Mexico City. In Mexico City, Terry becomes ill and visits a specialist, Dr. Rivas, who tells her that some lead, lodged in her chest when she was struck by a stray bullet, is nearing her heart, and that she is in need of a risky operation or she will die within three months. Later, at her home, Terry is visited by a private investigator, who delivers a message from Pete saying that he is in love with her and would like to see her. Pete has returned to his job at the mining company but is unable to concentrate on his work because he misses Terry. When Terry shows up at the mine unexpectedly, Pete tells her that his wife has died and he is now free to marry her. Terry, however, does not believe that she can live up to his expectations, so she tells him that she no longer loves him. Later, Pete discovers that the real reason behind her unusual behavior when he learns about her condition from his partner, Cliff Sutton. After searching for Terry for months, Pete finds her in Acapulco, where she confirms Cliff's story and sobs. Pete gives her a renewed sense of hope when he promises to have his friend, Dr. Vernon, one of the best surgeons in the world, perform the delicate operation. Prior to the operation, Terry and Pete are married in a beautiful church and take a brief honeymoon. While Terry's life hangs in the balance in the operation room, Pete returns to the church and prays. The operation is a success, and Pete soon returns to his mining camp with a recovered Terry.

Notes

Working titles of the film were Strange Love and Valley of Fear. As the onscreen credits were not available, the cast list was taken from the film's pressbook and a typewritten cast list found in the film's file in the MPAA/PCA Collection at the AMPAS Library. These two sources differed slightly. According to the film's pressbook, portions of the film were shot on location around Acapulco and in Mexico City, Mexico.
