Synopsis

When U.S. Treasury Department officials learn about the theft of several loads of newly refined gold from a mine near the Mexican border and the appearance of counterfeit gold coins from Mexico, they assign agent Rex Allen and his partner, Homer Oglethorpe, to the case. Rex and Homer travel to El Norte, a small town situated next to the mine, to begin their investigation. Meanwhile, in town, phrenologist Madeline "Mad" Wellington tells her father Nap that the bank has called and will be asking for repayment of their loan the next day. When Rex sees the town gathered for a chuck wagon race later, he decides to enter. Despite Hays Lawson's attempt to drive him off the road, Rex wins the race, after which Mad asks for permission to examine his head. When Mad explains her father's predicament, Rex agrees to help them. Later, Rex and Homer leave to meet Mexican secret service Capt. Arturo Gomez, who is to assist them in capturing the gang. Gomez gives Rex some pieces of identification with which to establish his new identity, that of counterfeiter Mike Jordan. The next day, Rex goes to Box Canyon, where a group of smugglers were recently spotted, but finds no clues. Later, Nap and Rex leave to check on a shipment of gold from the El Norte Gold Refinery, when they meet the sheriff and a man named Giles Starkey, who are leaving with the shipment. Suddenly, the gang attacks, stealing the gold and disappearing into Box Canyon. After being shot by one of the bandits, the sheriff guesses that the gang escaped through a cave or shaft set into the canyon wall. Later, Rex returns to Box Canyon and discovers a hidden mine shaft. Suddenly, Lawson appears and grabs Rex, forcing him to return to town. There, Homer hears Lawson's charge of trespassing and insists that the sheriff arrest "Mike Jordan." Just to be certain that the sheriff will lock him up, Rex pretends to be boisterously drunk. When the sheriff decides later to leave the jail for a few minutes, Homer slips Rex the key so he can unlock his cell. When Bob Handley, the sheriff's deputy, then tries to enter the jail, Homer forestalls him to ensure Rex time to escape. Later, as Giles tells Mad about Rex's capture, a helicopter lands nearby, and he forces her to get inside. Seeing the helicopter take off with Mad, Rex grasps onto its landing gear, hanging on until he can jump off safely just prior to landing. Giles then takes Mad into a building where Lawson waits. Rex approaches and knocks on the door, and when he identifies himself as Jordan, Giles and Lawson let him in. When Rex then tells them that Gomez's men have surrounded the building, Giles and Lawson rush for the helicopter. Mad and Rex escape, but are pursued by Giles and Lawson. After the helicopter lands, Giles and Lawson are arrested by the sheriff. The next morning, Nap wishes Rex good luck as he leaves for his next assignment.
