Synopsis

When Giles, the ne'er-do-well son of the Earl of Bateson, is expelled from college for carousing, his father refuses to forgive him until he can prove himself worthy by earning half a crown. He then goes to the estate of Mr. Annesley where he accepts the position of gardener. While there, he meets and falls in love with Sally, the daughter of a poor parson, who has been stealing roses for her father's church. When Sally learns that Giles and his father are estranged, she vows to bring them together. She goes to the earl and charms him, becoming his trusted companion. When Sally is injured trying to pick some herbs to cure his gout, the earl goes to see her, first stopping at an inn where he gives the groom a half crown for helping his horse. By coincidence, Giles is the groom and in the end, having proven himself worthy, he marries Sally with the earl's blessing.
