Synopsis

When a gypsy band is ordered off the aristocratic English Calhoun estate, they seize little Doris Calhoun, who is playing with Pierre, a crippled gypsy boy. Twelve years later, Doris, now called Kilmeny, runs away rather than marry the brutal Barouche. In the woods, Kilmeny sees Lord Leigh kill a bird, and she stops him from hunting another. Fascinated by her wildness, Leigh takes Kilmeny to his manor, where she adjusts to electricity, fickle showers, long dresses and a humorless butler. Lady Leigh soon becomes jealous over her husband's attentions to Kilmeny, as does her visiting brother, Bob Meredith, who loves the girl. When she realizes the disturbances in the family, Kilmeny returns to the gypsies and is told to marry Barouche within three days. Knowing it will cost his life, Pierre finds Kilmeny's real father, who then claims his daughter just before the wedding. The Leighs and Bob receive an invitation to visit the Calhouns and are shocked to see Kilmeny. Explanations follow, and Kilmeny quietly comes to an understanding with Bob.
