Synopsis

Hi Judd, a genial country postmaster, is loved by all the townsfolk except for Jim Skinner, an old miser who holds the mortgage to Hi's home and would like Hi's job. Hi's domineering wife makes him feel guilty when his verse writing, which pleases his neighbors, interferes with his chores, but their daughter Bess supports him and secretly sends his verses to a New York newspaper. After Bess becomes infatuated with Sam, the new ticket agent from the city, and breaks with her faithful sweetheart Hal, the stationmaster, Hi finds a picture of Sam, his baby, and his wife Belle, who earlier ran away from her mother, Widow Wilkins. Hi sends for Belle and then convinces Sam to live up to his responsibilities. When the new administration takes over, Hi loses his job to Skinner, who is about to foreclose on Hi's home, when a $1,000 check for Hi's verses arrives. Bess and Hal become engaged, and the Widow Wilkins is happy with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchild.
