Synopsis
Marcus, a Roman tribune, is sent to Asia to oversee the building of an aqueduct. Gaius, the former overseer, had been unpopular with the slaves because of his cruel treatment of them, and Marcus does not employ the same methods. Angered after Marcus beats him in a duel, Gaius incites a slave revolt in which all Romans are killed except Marcus, who is saved by Balisten, a slave whom he had befriended. The slaves are recaptured and crucified, but Marcus, who appeared to have been responsible for the revolt, escapes with Balisten and five other slaves. In the city, they meet Efrem, a gladiator organizer, and form a band of gladiators who fight with masks to avoid being captured by the Romans. Upon hearing of a conspiracy to overthrow the government, they help uncover the plotters, led by Gaius. The slaves thus regain their freedom, and Marcus preserves his reputation.
