Synopsis

Literary critic David Holmes, a recluse and a misogynist, becomes the guardian of ten-year-old Sylvia when her father dies. Unable to cope with the child, David sends her to the country to live with Aunt Clem. At the age of twenty-one, Sylvia comes to visit, and David is overwhelmed by her beauty. David agrees to accompany her to the social functions he once detested, and suddenly he finds himself in love with her. As he is preparing to judge a literary contest, David hears that Sylvia has a suitor who plans to marry her if he wins the prize money. Unaware of the youth's identity, the critic judges his rival's story the winner. Apprised of the situation soon afterwards, David decides not to stand in the way of youth. Sylvia, believing that David does not love her, reluctantly agrees to the marriage, but before the ceremony, the bachelor and his ward realize their mutual love and are united.
