Synopsis
When wealthy San Francisco railroad magnate Jefferson Stockton's daughter Virginia becomes engaged to Stuyvesant Lawrence, the son of an old aristocratic New York family, Mr. Lawrence goes West to stop the wedding. When Lawrence refuses to consent to the marriage, Stockton implores Virginia to accompany him and his young wife Diana to England where he has rented an estate. Virginia and Stuyvesant write to each other, but Mrs. Lawrence intercepts their letters. Virginia then marries fortune-hunting Prince Emil von Haldenwald, thinking that Stuyvesant is engaged to someone else. On her wedding night, Virginia learns that Stuyvesant has been faithful to her and is in Europe. She and Emil stay at her father's house until one evening, while Stockton is away, Emil enters Diana's bedroom and tries to rape her. When Stockton arrives, he throws Emil out and the latter is killed in a quarrel over debts. Eventually, Stuyvesant and Virginia are reunited and the new European social position of the Stocktons makes them acceptable to the Lawrences.
