Synopsis

The high-born but poor Dulcie Larondie works as a bar maid in the rowdy Skagg Inn and is loved by David Remon, an earnest but equally poor astronomer. Weary of her poverty, Dulcie accepts a marriage proposal from Sir Brice Skene, a wealthy nobleman who visits the inn and offers an exorbitant sum for one of her kisses as part of a contest. Dulcie soon discovers that Skene's love of gaming does not stop at kisses, however, and after four years of marriage, he loses his entire fortune. A violent-tempered drunk, Skene humiliates Dulcie at a reception attended by David. Still true to his love, David agrees to play cards with the intoxicated Skene and puts up his bank account in exchange for Dulcie and the child that she bore to Skene. After the third cut of the cards, David wins the game. Skene is then killed by a vengeful blackmailer, and Dulcie is free to wed the man she truly loves.
