Synopsis

In the French Canadian town of Beaulieu, Allaine Grandet is sold into marriage to a brutal trapper named Jules Latour. Allaine's husband treats her so cruelly that she comes to fear all men, an obsession that is deepened when Jules gambles her away to James Dermot, who forces her to dance in his notorious saloon. Here she befriends Harley Dane, a dissipated pianist who becomes regenerated through her love. Having repeatedly threatened Allaine, Dermot attacks her, whereupon she, summoning all her courage, shoots him in the arm. On his way to claim his wife's earnings, Jules loses his way in a snowstorm, and when Allaine and Harley find his body, they decide to leave Beaulieu to begin a new life together.
