Synopsis

Filled with romantic dreams of youth, Germaine is shocked and disheartened to discover that, for financial reasons, her parents have arranged a marriage for her with Lucien D'Artois, a wealthy man of rough manners who loves dogs more than evening clothes. Germaine makes her distaste known to her new husband, and Lucien goes to Paris in order to make himself over, becoming a regular dandy. Before Lucien can return to Germaine, however, she writes to him, letting him know that she can never be happy. Lucien becomes despondent and dissipates his entire fortune in reckless living. Delandal, an underhanded suitor of the lovely Germaine, leads her falsely to believe that Lucien has been unfaithful, and Germaine goes to Paris to ask Lucien for her freedom, discovering that, although he has been forced by circumstances to take a menial position, he has become a polished gentleman. Germaine belatedly declares her love for Lucien.
