Synopsis
Desperate over his failing mayoral campaign, Frank Grandell, the reform candidate, sends his henchmen to dig into the past of Art Hoke, the local political boss. The investigations lead to "Loony Jim," Hoke's devoted flunkey, who teases Hoke's men with knowledge about May, the boss's daughter, but dies before revealing his secret. Eventually, Grandell does find out that "Loony Jim" had found May as an infant and had given her to the bachelor Hoke as a present. Grandell offers to buy Hoke's support in exchange for his silence, but Hoke takes the money and continues in his opposition. Before Grandell carries out his threat, Mary Grandell, a former sweetheart of Hoke, visits her husband's rival and, seeing May's baby clothes, realizes that May is her long-lost daughter. Brought together by their common interest in May, the factions agree to bury their antagonisms and allow Richard Benton, May's fiancé and Grandell's campaign opponent, to win the race.
