Synopsis
Tom Cameron, a vigilante known as "The Lone Rider," and his sidekick, Fuzzy Jones, come to the rescue of their friend, Smoky Hammer, when he is attacked by a gang of outlaws. Although Smoky survives his injuries, he decides to pretend that he was killed so that he can determine who is trying to prevent him from inheriting his share of his father's ranch, the Bar B-X. Smoky's sister Tess was reared by foreman Sidney Clayton, who posed as her father, and she is unaware that her real father was murdered, and that she has a brother. Tess protests the toll that Clayton levies against any rancher who brings his cattle across their land, but although she is half owner of the ranch, she has no real power over Clayton. Unknown to Tess, rancher Harkness is responsible for convincing Clayton to charge the tolls. Harkness believes that he has killed Smoky and now plots to get rid of Tess so that Clayton will be full owner of the ranch. When Tom and Fuzzy save Tess from an attempt on her life, she hires them to work on the ranch. Clayton protests that they cannot afford the men, but eventually gives in to Tess. Clayton then secretly confronts Harkness about Smoky's murder, insisting that he only wanted to scare Smoky away from the ranch. One day, when Smoky robs the toll-taker and returns the money to a rancher, everyone thinks they have seen a ghost. Smoky proves he is flesh and blood, however, when he fights with Harkness to prevent him from proposing to Tess. Tom then reveals to Tess the truth about her parentage, and Jake, one of Harkness' men, overhears and reports back to Harkness that Smoky is still alive. Tom and Smoky continue to rob the toll-taker and return the money to ranchers, but when Harkness captures Tom in the act, Tom replies that Clayton is now giving them orders. Harkness then orders the sheriff to arrest Tom, but the sheriff later releases him when Tom swears that he can identify Smoky's father's killer. When they arrive at the Bar B-X ranch, Harkness and Clayton are engaged in a dispute, so Smoky, disguised as his father, frightens Clayton into naming Harkness as his father's killer. Harkness then kills Clayton, but is outwitted and captured by Tom during an escape attempt. Later Smoky and Tess reunite as the rightful heirs to the Bar B-X ranch.
