Synopsis

Alice Hale marries civil engineer Tom Morley only because of his money. Then, when Tom refuses to join his father's firm because it would mean leaving his railroad building job half completed, the elder Morley promises to give Alice a million dollars if she can make Tom's railroad fail. To get the money, Alice convinces the men working for Tom to go on strike, after which, learning of her involvement, Tom insists on a separation. Then, when the workers start burning the construction camp, Alice realizes that she really does love Tom. As a result, she goes to the men and tells them that she had trumped up the reasons for the strike, and urges them to go back to work. After they comply, Alice, having lost the million dollars but eager to regain her husband, quickly makes up with Tom.

Notes

The Selfish Woman was also called The Taming of Helen. E. Mason Hopper is apparently the film's officially credited director, but early trade announcements give Melford as the director, and 1941 items in the Paramount studio records list the two men as co-directors.
