Synopsis

Curt Walker, son of rancher Pop Walker, and his friend Big Boy Thompson capture Dynamite, a wild stallion, planning to use the reward money for catching the steed to pay for Curt's entry fee to the Smoky River rodeo. At Pop's Triple X ranch, meanwhile, sheep rancher John Burton bets Pop $10,000 against the Triple X that Curt will lose the rodeo championship. After loading Dynamite into a trailer, Curt and Big Boy drive to Smoky River to collect their reward. Along the way, Barbara Allen, sister of The Hoosier Hot Shots singing group, honks her car horn while driving by, causing Dynamite to bolt out of the trailer and run to freedom. Soon after, as she strolls in a field along the roadside, Barbara is almost run over by the stampeding horse, but Curt pulls her to safety and lassos the animal. Furious that Barbara's recklessness has almost cost them their valuable cargo, Curt scolds her and then drives away. Upon arriving in Smoky River, the Hot Shots find that there are no hotel rooms available and are forced to take shelter in a barn. Curt and Big Boy then come to town and discover that Burton is trying to bribe the rodeo contestants to insure that Curt will lose. After the sheriff accuses them of trespassing and orders them to leave the barn, Barbara and the Hot Shots set up camp on the outskirts of town. Cold and hungry, they are drawn to the tantalizing aromas emanating from Pop's campfire, where the cook has begun to prepare dinner. When Pop invites the Hot Shots to join them and Curt offers Barbara a plate of food, peace is made between the warring factions. Pop then invites the group to stay at the ranch, but when a romance develops between Curt and Barbara, Pop becomes concerned that Curt will be distracted by love and thus perform poorly at the rodeo. With the help of Big Boy, Pop convinces Barbara that Curt is already married, leading her to break off their relationship. On the day of the rodeo, Curt, suffering from a broken heart, loses several of the events. When Curt is assigned to ride Dynamite in the Bronco Busting contest, a horse that has never been ridden before, Pop fears for his son's safety and determines to reunite the lovelorn Curt with Barbara, and renew his will to win. Barbara, however, has decided to leave town, and as the Hot Shots jump in a wagon to bring her back, Pop delays the beginning of the Bronc Busting competition by presenting a series of singing acts. At the ranch, the Hot Shots kidnap Barbara, and after explaining Curt's peril to her, they speed back to the rodeo, arriving just in time to spur Curt to victory.
