Synopsis

Richard Marsden, married to Helen Fraine, is a long-time friend of Henry Desmond, a powerful and successful attorney. The district attorney and the political machine plan to break Desmond by having George Quinn infer that Marsden's wife is having an affair with the lawyer. An argument ensues between Quinn and Desmond; and in the struggle, Quinn is killed. Finding that Marsden has been arrested for the crime, Desmond, despite Helen's pleading, refuses to defend him because of a guilty conscience and his hope to win Helen's love for himself. At the climax of the trial, as Marsden is found guilty, Desmond confesses his guilt but is unable to convince the officials. Ultimately, Desmond produces evidence to prove his guilt, but he is released on a plea of self-defense, and the Marsdens are reaffirmed in their love.
