Synopsis
College student Jimmy Shay trains "Lightning Lad," a horse left to him by his father, for racing by getting his bleating goat "Adolph" to spur him on. Meanwhile, Less Winters, who hopes to marry wealthy stable owner Marion Braddock, tries to buy Lightning Lad for her, but Jimmy refuses to sell the horse. After Jimmy's schoolmate Bottsie convinces his college peers to buy stock in Lightning Lad, Jimmy has enough money to race him and wins several races. Jimmy then plans to run Lightning Lad in the $100,000 San Lucas Handicap race against Marion's horse, but needs $1,100 to enter. Marion, angry at the competition, orders Less to buy Lightning Lad for $5,000, while a group of gamblers tries to cheat Bottsie out of the corporation's money. Jimmy saves both the horse and the money, however, and Marion attends a college dance and charms the boys into selling her their shares. She then offers Jimmy's jockey Mick three times the price of his shares, plus a contract with her, but he refuses. Jimmy then tells Mick about himself: When he was a boy, his father worked for the Braddock stables and Jimmy fell in love with Marion. When he saved her from a runaway pony one day, she repaid him with a twenty dollar gold piece, which Jimmy plans to return to her when Lightning wins the Handicap. Later, Marion overhears Jimmy accuse her of believing money can buy her anything; ashamed, she returns the boys' shares at no cost. She confesses to Bottsie, and he helps her to get work for Jimmy by posing as vagabond Jane Smith. The day of the race, Winters and the gamblers kidnap Lightning Lad and Adolph and lock Marion in a closet. Although Jimmy thinks Marion was informing on him, she proves her loyalty when she reveals that she switched horses, and Lightning Lad arrives safely at the track in a Braddock trailer. Bottsie releases Adolph in time for him to bleat Lightning Lad to victory, and after the race, Jimmy drops the gold piece when returning it to Marion and while they search for it, they kiss.
