Synopsis

When she discovers that her husband Wilson Ostrom already had a wife when he married her, Alida Armstrong leaves him and accepts an offer from James Holcroft to be his housekeeper. Before she takes the job, however, she makes James marry her in order to prevent gossip about a man and woman living together. At first, their relationship is purely a business one, but they slowly come to love each other. Then, when Wilson arrives to claim Alida, he starts fighting with her new husband, and dies when James throws him off a cliff. Afterwards, James and Alida, who is finally certain of having a husband who loves her unreservedly, settle down to a happy married life.
