Synopsis

Until he met Texas Ryan, the Eastern-bred daughter of rugged cattle king William Ryan, Jack Parker was just a straight-shooting, hard-riding cowboy. Hoping to see Texas again, Parker accepts a job on the Ryan ranch. While there, he succeeds in upsetting the designs of Mexican bandit Antonio Moreno to kidnap Texas, and foils the plans of Dice McAllister, Moreno's accomplice, to steal Ryan's herds. The distance between a cowboy and that of a wealthy rancher's daughter finally proves too great for Parker, however, who leaves for Mexico. A few days later, Texas learns that Parker is being held prisoner by Moreno. Enlisting the aid of the U.S. Cavalry, Texas arrives just in time to free Parker and award him the heart of Texas Ryan.

Trivia

Notes

The working title for this film was probably The Light of Western Stars, a Selig production started in 1916, which was based on a Zane Grey novel (New York, 1914) of the same name. Production news items for The Light of Western Stars reported that the film was shot at Mix's ranch in Newhall, CA and included Victoria Forde and Vivian Reed in the cast. According to modern sources, an injunction against the use of Zane Grey's story forced Selig to rewrite and recut the 1916 film. The character played by William Rhino is called "Lagos de Moreno" in the synopsis included in the copyright descriptions, while other sources list him as "Antonio Moreno." In 1918, Sherman Productions, Inc. produced a film entitled The Light of Western Stars, directed by Charles Swickard and starring Dustin Farnum and Winifred Kingston. For information on that film and others adapted from the Zane Grey novel, please consult that entry in AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1911-20.
