Synopsis

Skole and Hjamlamar (better known as Yal) are sailors aboard the White Bear Line's oil steamer Almaden. Yal tells Skole of his unhappy experience with his sweetheart, Hulda, back in Sweden: five years ago he sent her $1,000 to come to America, but she never showed up. Despite this experience, Yal has a new girl, Annie, who is his partner in a delicatessen in San Francisco. When they arrive in port, Captain Larsen, president of the company, offers him a promotion and a chance to buy a share in a new ship, the Hulda. He goes to tell Annie the news and finds her in Skole's arms. Yal throws him out after a fight. When he tells her about his opportunity, Annie refuses to sell the shop--and he cannot prove that it was bought with his money. Dejected, Yal seeks the docks. Unknown to Yal, Hulda never received the $1,000 he sent her but came to San Francisco anyhow and has been adopted by the Larsens. They meet, and she persuades him to return to work, telling him she is only a maid in the Larsen household. When Larsen dies, she inherits the estate and Yal is made president of the company.
