Synopsis
Eileen Rodney, the young ward of attorney John Harland, becomes fascinated by Raymond Moreland, who poses as a teacher of Eastern cults and creeds, but secretly sneers at the foolish women swayed by his words. Eileen writes fervent letters to Moreland, couched in the terms of his free love teachings, and he convinces her to go to India with him. Moreland's plans are spoiled by Eleanor Dare, a woman who has been betrayed by him, and Eileen, her eyes opened by Eleanor's exposé, agrees to marry Harland, who has always been in love with her. A year later, Moreland returns and threatens Eileen with exposure of their old affair unless she comes to his rooms to reclaim the love letters. Eileen reluctantly visits Moreland's apartments, where he assaults her. After barely escaping his advances, Eileen reads in the paper the next morning that Moreland has been murdered. The case is assigned to her husband, now the district attorney, and Eileen, fearing that the letters will incriminate her, returns to Moreland's room the next night just as Harland and the police also come to search the room. Things look bleak until Eleanor Dare is exposed as Moreland's murderer, and Eileen's secret is buried with Moreland.
