Synopsis

Six Hungarian Hussars, weary from fighting, ride into a frontier town and discover it occupied by Russians. Lieut. Paul Almasy orders them to fight, but his horse falls, and he drags himself to the porter's lodge of the Hotel Imperial, where he falls asleep. Anna, Elias, and Anton, the remaining servants, carry him to a bedroom; the next morning Anna persuades him to act as their waiter. Anna is courted by General Juschkiewitsch, whose advances she accepts in order to assure Paul's release. Tabakowitsch, a spy, returns from the front and orders Paul to prepare his bath; learning he has plans which may rout Hungarian forces, Paul kills him, and Anna makes the death appear to be by suicide. The general suspects foul play and has Paul investigated; but Anna comes to his defense, and the general tears off her finery. The Hungarians reclaim their town, and Anna and Paul are reunited.
