Synopsis
When a reporter learns that a body found in a Hollywood hotel has been identified as Mayo, a studio electrician who was working on an anti-aircraft device for the government, he concludes that the man was murdered. Later, a Nazi front group called the North American Peace Association, which is secretly headed by the Nazi spy Werner, searches for the blueprints for Mayo's invention, a filter that would allow a searchlight to expose enemy aircraft without visible light. During their search, the Nazis discover a picture of Mayo's daughter Mitzi and decide to try to get the plans from her. Meanwhile, Mitzi's boyfriend Jimmy tells her that he is joining the Army. When Mitzi's roommate Joan borrows her car for a date with her boyfriend Eddie, some of Werner's cronies follow them and steal Joan's diamond engagement ring and Mitzi's car. Near the waterfront, Carl Beck, a German-American member of Werner's group, and his girl friend haunt a bar hoping to pick up information from careless drinkers. Facts gleaned from a sailor's girl friend lead to the bombing of an American submarine. Soon after, Mitzi and Jimmy return to Mitzi's after a date, and discover that the house has been searched. She then tells Jimmy that she has her father's plans for the filter and asks him to keep them safe. Jimmy suggests that they show the plans to George McCall, an electrician at the studio where they both work, who might be able to build the filter. Later, Jimmy is asked to defer his plans to join the Army to help radio commentator Bob Davis investigate subversive groups and is assigned to watch Nelson and Jennings, the American figureheads of the North American Peace Association. Later, at the bar where Mitzi performs as a singer, Joan recognizes one of the men who stole her ring and calls Eddie. During the ensuing fight, one of the men drops his wallet, and the papers inside reveal his connection to Werner's group. Meanwhile, Davis discovers that his office is bugged and, with Jimmy's help, feeds the eavesdroppers false information. Jimmy then discovers the location of the spies's headquarters and sets up a system to tape their interactions. Later, Jimmy and Mitzi overhear Axis plans to bomb Los Angeles and turn the recordings over to the FBI. Meanwhile, Werner's men discover that they are being tapped and trace the tap to Mitzi's apartment. They capture Jimmy, Mitzi and Davis and take them and the recordings away. Jimmy plays them a recording that he and Mitzi made while pretending to be Werner and his mistress Anna and convinces the men that Werner is planning to double-cross them. During the ensuing confusion, U.S. government agents arrive and arrest Werner and his men. Later, Jimmy and Mitzi watch a demonstration of her father's invention, and Jimmy tells Mitzi that he loves her.
