Synopsis

Although they are deeply in love with each other, the Merediths have quarreled and decide to separate, but cannot agree on the disposition of their little daughter, Beryl. This is opportune for the plans of Spider, a notorious kidnapper and his gang, who steal Beryl while her nurse flirts in the park. Desperate, the Merediths hire Babbings, a celebrated detective, to find their daughter. Suspecting Spider, Babbings trails the kidnapper and discovers that he is receiving messages in code. Meanwhile, Barney, who has been fired from his job at a messenger service for reading too many detective stories, applies for a job with Babbings who, impressed with the youth's ingenuity, hires him to decoy the kidnappers by masquerading as a wealthy deaf and dumb boy. The gang swallows the bait, kidnaps Barney and takes him to their hideout where they are holding Beryl. The plan almost succeeds until Babbings, signalled by Barney, comes to the house disguised as a member of the gang and is inadvertently exposed by Mrs. Meredith. The gang flees with Barney and Beryl in tow, but Barney finally manages to rescue the baby and is rewarded by becoming one of Babbings' detectives, and the Merediths are reconciled.
