Synopsis

In a small village in England, John Perrybingle, the mail carrier, a bachelor, pays court to and marries Dot, whom he takes to his home. The livingroom contains a large hearth, with a kettle hung over the fire, and with great glee Dot spies on the hearth a cricket, which is supposed to be a sign of happiness. The story is of the life of John and Dot, and of the trust that is shaken but restored through the singing of the cricket.
