Synopsis

Discovering her fiancé, Dario Niccolini, kissing a servant, Donna Vittoria appeals to her grandmother, the Princess Torini, to be freed from her betrothal and is refused. Nevertheless, Vittoria marries Count Filipo Navarro, an old family friend, on the condition that he take her with him to Africa. Owing to the malicious machinations of Dario, Navarro is called to Tripoli and is dispatched to the desert on a false rumor of uprising. Vittoria is accompanied to her husband's camp by Gabriel Amari, a handsome young soldier, and they gradually fall in love, though the preoccupied Navarro is blind to their feelings. Following a report of Navarro's death they are married by an Arab ceremony; then, learning the report to be false, Vittoria goes to join her first husband; in desperation over his defeat by the Bedouins, he slays himself, leaving her free to marry Gabriel.
