Synopsis

Jerry Randolph, the junior member of a New York architectural firm, is an incorrigible practical joker. After playing jokes on his best friend, Paul Dorreen, and the doorman of his apartment building, where both his girl friend Jane and Paul live, Jerry tricks a rich, elderly woman outside of his office building. To Jerry's chagrin, however, the woman turns out to be a prospective client whose contract he loses because of his joke. Then, at a penthouse party given by his boss, Runyon, Jerry arranges with a telephone operator to play yet another joke on Paul. While posing as an engineer from the National Broadcasting Network, Jerry has Paul called to the telephone and informs him that he has been offered the radio job he has long sought. Jerry then asks Paul to sing over the telephone, insisting on various ridiculous vocalizations on the pretext of testing the quality of his voice. Paul deduces Jerry's trick when he later ribs him about the call, and furious at Jerry's cruelty, Jane leaves the party with Paul. Later that evening, Jerry goes to Paul's apartment to apologize and finds him with a gun in his hand. A distraught Paul confesses that he loves Jane and hates to be humiliated in front of her. While Jerry rushes to telephone Jane, he is startled by the sound of a gunshot and turns to see Paul on the floor. The butler then comes in and accuses Jerry of murder, and Jerry flees in panic. While a fugitive, Jerry falls in with a trio of counterfeiters, who dupe him into participating in their schemes and take him to Mexico. After he is arrested with the trio, Jerry learns that Paul is alive and that he, consequently, was never sought by the police. Jerry escapes Mexico in an airplane and returns to New York, where he finds Jane with Paul. Heartbroken, Jerry leaves, after which Jane and Paul hear a gunshot in the hallway. Upon seeing the seemingly wounded Jerry, Jane begins to sob and proclaim her love and devotion. Finally, Jerry sits up, revealing he is uninjured, and tells Jane that those words of love were all he wanted to hear.
