Synopsis

Marie Landau is in love with Richard Voysin, a man who thinks that a woman's clothes are more important than the woman herself. To impress him, she orders a new wardrobe from a dressmaker hoping that she will inherit enough money to pay for the clothes later. Marie and Richard marry and Marie continues her spending spree even though her expected inheritance does not materialize. When they visit the home of the wealthy Mr. and Mrs. Legardes, Marie steals from Mrs. Legardes, after the angry dressmaker threatens to tell Richard if she is not paid. The Legardes' son Fernand is in love with Marie and covers for her crime, but she eventually confesses her own guilt when Mr. Legardes threatens to throw his son out.
