Synopsis
Billy the Kid and his friends, Fuzzy and Jeff, who have been unfairly labeled as outlaws, elude a posse by riding across a county line. On hearing gunshots nearby, they find an overturned wagon being defended by a small boy named Dickie Howard. Dickie's father is also in the wagon, but has been shot, and when a sheriff rides up, he arrests the men for the shooting and robbery of the wagon. The sheriff takes them to Dr. Elmo Hagen's office in Stone City, where, unknown to Billy and his friends, Hagen mercilessly kills Howard and reprimands the sheriff for not having finished the job himself. Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff escape the sheriff and bring Dickie home, but find three men brutalizing his mother. They rout the thugs, then hide when the sheriff comes to tell Mrs. Howard that her husband was murdered by Billy. Later that evening, Mrs. Howard tells Billy that the Ranchers Cooperative Association, which runs the only general store in town, has tricked the ranchers by giving them credit for supplies, then signing liens against their ranches when they are unable to pay because the crops are overdue. Morgan, who runs the association, is now ready to foreclose on the ranchers, many of whom have been mysteriously killed. Billy decides to stay and help the ranchers. One day, Billy and his friends see a rancher being attacked while driving a supply wagon, and come to his aid, but are too late to save him. Later, Morgan, who secretly knows that the government wants to buy the ranches, stops giving supplies on credit and plots with Hagen to foreclose. In turn, Hagen, the real mastermind, orders his men to kill Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff because of their interference. As a foil to Morgan, the three men open up a general store of their own, borrowing what little money the ranchers have to provide the supplies. They then plan to use two supply wagons, one of which will be a decoy. Unknown to Billy, there is a spy among the ranchers who reports their plan to Morgan and Hagen, and the wagon drawing the real supplies is attacked and the driver is shot. When Billy brings the driver, Hart, to Hagen, Hagen claims he is unable to help the man. Suspicious because all of Hagen's patients die, Billy pokes around his office while holding the physician at gunpoint, and finds a storeroom filled with guns and death certificates for all the deceased ranchers. When Billy later rides into town, the sheriff attempts to arrest him, having seen his picture on a wanted poster, but Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff turn the tables and take the sheriff hostage. They then ambush the men who stole the supply cart and leave them to walk home. The battle heats up when a wounded rancher reports that Morgan and his gang have started serving foreclosure notices, and are shooting any rancher who protests. Billy rouses the departing settlers to defend their homes, and he and the ranchers wage a gun battle from the hills. When Jeff is shot, Fuzzy takes him to Hagen, unaware of the physician's predilection for killing his patients, and then returns to the gunfight. Billy is alarmed upon learning that Jeff is in Hagen's care, and immediately rides to his friend's rescue. He arrives in time to save Jeff from a fatal injection by Hagen, who confesses his deed only after Billy threatens him with his own medicine. Fuzzy then arrives, as the gang has been subdued, and saves Billy from being shot by Roberts. With Hagen and Morgan behind bars, the ranchers burn up their liens, and Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff move on.
