Synopsis
Clelia leaves her job as a couturier in a fashionable Rome dress shop and goes home to Turin to set up a boutique. After moving into a hotel, she makes several new friends, including Rosetta Savoni, a next door neighbor who is unable to get along with her wealthy parents; Lorenzo, a painter who is jealous of his wife Nene's artistic abilities; and Momina de Stefani, a bored sophisticate. Rosetta is having an unhappy love affair with Lorenzo and attempts suicide, even though Nene is willing to tolerate their relationship. Meanwhile, Clelia falls in love with Carlo, an architect's assistant, but discards any consideration of marriage because his meager income would force them to live in poverty. When Lorenzo finally admits that he prefers his work to Rosetta and Nene and that both women bore him, Rosetta kills herself, and Lorenzo eventually returns to his wife. Clelia is fired from her job when she becomes hysterical over the death of her friend, and she leaves for Rome.
