Synopsis

When the McGregor family is unable to pay their feed bills for their trotter Senator Peachy, Mr. Boggs, the feed store owner, comes to foreclose on the horse. Before he can claim Senator Peachy, however, little Toni McGregor flees with her beloved steed to the harness track at the fairgrounds. Meanwhile, socialite Pamela Trent arrives at the fairgrounds with her high-strung horse Royal Storm and immediately hires handsome Bill Nolan to train the animal. Having stowed away in Royal Storm's trailer, The Hoosier Hot Shots, Hezzie, Ken, Gil and Gabe, who have come to town to claim a house they inherited from their late uncle, pile out and greet their old friend Bill. Toni, trying to avoid the sheriff and Boggs, begs the Hot Shots to help her hide Senator Peachy, but when the horse breaks free and gallops onto the track, Boggs takes possession of him. Sympathetic to the little girl's dreams of entering Senator Peachy in the big race, the Hot Shots promise to help Toni reclaim her horse. Upon arriving at their new address, the Hot Shots are pleasantly surprised to find a mansion and decide to turn it into a hotel and use the income to buy back Senator Peachy. Unfortunately, the Hot Shots have misread the address, and the mansion is actually being rented by Pamela, who has them arrested for trespassing. When Bill bails the Hot Shots out of jail with Pamela's funds, Margie McGregor, Toni's older sister and Bill's sweetheart, becomes suspicious of Pamela's motives and warns Bill that she is falling in love with him. To fulfill Toni's dream, Bill starts to train Senator Peachy, but the horse balks and refuses to run until one of the Hot Shots strums a washboard, causing him to bolt off. Later, Pamela overhears Bill promising to marry Margie as soon as he accumulates enough money, and becomes insanely jealous. Consequently, when Bill begins to borrow money to place a bet on Royal Storm, Pamela plots revenge. After assuming ownership of Senator Peachy in payment for the Hot Shots's bail, Pamela enters both horses as a single entry and then poisons Royal Storm to disqualify him from the race. Realizing that he will lose every penny that he bet, Bill implores Pamela to withdraw Senator Peachy. After spitefully boasting that she fixed the race so that Bill would lose, Pamela contemptuously offers to sell Senator Peachy for fifty cents and Gabe takes her up on her offer. When Hezzy remembers Senator Peachy being sparked by the sound of the washboard, the Hot Shots steal a microphone and amplify the rhythm of the washboard, spurring the horse to victory.
