Synopsis

In 1914, fourteen-year-old Olof takes a job as a timber floater at a logging camp in Norrbotten in northern Sweden. The work is grueling, but Olof stays with it until the approach of winter forces him to find a job at a brickyard-sawmill. His disillusionment and anger upon discovering his boss's callousness toward a workman injured in an accident lead to Olof's being fired. At his next job, as a billboard sticker and candy salesman in a Boden movie theater, he meets his first girl friend, Maria; but his love for her is short-lived. Touring the summer village fairs as an assistant to Nicke, a motion picture projectionist, Olof boasts of his sexual activities, but later he reveals his inexperience by turning down a sexual invitation from Nicke's girl friend, Olivia. After hearing through a wall the sounds of Nicke and Olivia making love, Olof runs away, finds a job in a blacksmith's shop, and has his first sexual encounter when he seduces the blacksmith's daughter. Leaving her with merely a handshake, Olof takes a train out of town and arrives at a political rally. Upon returning to his job at the movie theater, he discovers that his acquired socialist leanings displease his boss, and he is fired. Retracing his steps, Olof sets up housekeeping with Olivia, but tiring of her wantonness, he soon leaves her and goes to work for a railroad. When his plans to call a strike and organize a union fail, Olof gets drunk for the first time in his life. Finally, as World War I ends, Olof looks back on his experiences, satisfied that he has become a man, and heads south in search of new adventures.
