Synopsis
The unparalleled success of "Roots" in 1977 prompted this continuation of Alex Haley's saga, beginning with the events where its predecessor ended in 1882 and bringing the story to the present with James Earl Jones playing Haley and Marlon Brando as American Nazi leader George Lincoln Rockwell, who agreed to an interview in the 1960s with Haley for "Playboy." Brando won an Emmy (as Outstanding Supporting Actor) for his ten-minute cameo part, his television acting debut. "Roots: The Next Generations" covered fourteen television hours, two more than its predecessor, with only Georg Stanford Brown and Lynne Moody (as Tom Harvey and his wife Irene, Alex Haley's great-great-grandparents) continuing the roles they began in "Roots." Brown also directed several hours of the sequel.Like its predecessor, "Roots: The Next Generations" was an Emmy Award winner as Outstanding Limited Series, with other nominations also going to Ruby Dee as Outstanding Supporting actress, to Al Freeman Jr. and Paul Winfield as Outstanding Supporting Actor (in competition with Brando) to writer Ernest Kinoy (for Episode 1) and to the makeup experts (for Episode 3).
